I am riding the DC to Pittsburgh route and making plans to meet my sister at Dravo Landing to ride my last section together.

Is she able to park temporarily at Dravo Landing at Henderson Road to drop off her camping gear then park overnight at the trailhead in Buena Vista?

Rivnuts from Homestead, PA on 08/31/2022 10:15 AM:
There is no parking at Dravo Landing. There is no public access to Dravo Landing via Henderson Road. The closest parking is in Buena Vista off of McGowan Road. That parking location is about 1.5 miles from Dravo Landing.

Another option would be to meet and camp with you at the GAP Trail Campground in West Newton which is about 7 miles from Dravo Landing. It is a pay-to-stay campground albeit at a modest cost and offers showers and access to places to eat while there. Just a thought.

Is the trail to Dravo open now?

Rivnuts from Homestead,PA on 03/19/2022 03:53 PM:
As far as I know it is open. It was late last year when I last rode out that way. The trail to Dravo Landing was closed for a major sewer replacement for several months but was reopened last spring.

Rivnuts from Homestead,PA on 03/22/2022 05:54 PM:
I rode from Homestead, PA to West Newton today passing through Buena Vista and by Dravo Landing in route. Indeed the trail is open following the adjacent sewer line replacement project completed last year. The trail was in good shape especially given the time of year and recent rainfall.

Are bear canisters a necessity to camp here, and if so, anywhere specific they should go? What would you recommend in terms of overnight food storage?

Rivnuts from Homestead,PA on 08/16/2021 08:47 PM:
I’ve never seen (during dozens of rides through there) nor heard of bears in that area. I do not believe bear canisters are warranted there. I’d be more concerned with raccoons getting the food rather than bears. However, if you are truly concerned about your food you could employ the simplest solution which would be to hang your food sack in a tree. That said there are enough places along the GAP to get food, one really doesn’t need to carry much in the way of food. Others may have different experiences or opinions.

Planning a bike trip to DC! Is camping here free? and do we have to make a reservation ahead of time?

John W. from Pittsburgh,PA on 04/08/2021 01:15 PM:
Dravo Landing hiker-biker site is free and does not require reservations. Room for 25-30 plus one Adirondack shelter. Just show up as you see fit and pitch your tent.

Rivnuts from Homestead,PA on 04/08/2021 06:08 PM:
In addition to the Dravo Cemetery/Landing campsite, you’ll find free trail side camping along the GAP at Cedar Creek Park, Round Bottom Camp and Stewart’s Crossing in Connellsville. No reservations are required but access to the Adirondack shelters is first come first serve. Of course you can always pitch a tent at any of them.

Of course, there are numerous free hiker/biker campsites along the C&O Towpath as well.

Today is Monday, December 7, 2020 and I just got off the phone and thought I would share this important information: “ PER PHONE CALL FROM LESLIE, WEST NEWTON TRAIL COUNCIL: "Dravo Cemetery is closed. The area will be used by the contract workers. No one is to canoe in, walk in or bike in to Dravo Cemetery area. Furthermore, The section of the trail which is closed also includes all the adjacent trail properties. Privately owned Henderson Road which leads down to Dravo is off-limits. However, the contract workers will be using Henderson Road." RE: 724 872 5586 Leslie” furthermore, you may access the trail at Buena Vista and bicycle or walk south towards West Newton etc.… But NOT North!.

Rivnuts from Homestead,PA on 12/07/2020 07:05 PM:
Thanks for this info regarding Dravo Campground. Hope the construction contractor(s) don’t degrade the campground site. It has been carefully maintained and manicured over the years making it a favorite rest and camping location along the trail.

Is camping at the dravo cemetery/Qween Aliquippa camp possible during the present trail closure?

Rivnuts from Homestead,PA on 12/05/2020 09:41 PM:
While camping per se’ at Dravo Cemetery is likely possible, the problem is getting there. In addition to the signs alerting riders to the trail closure schedule, there was an actual Trail Closed sign directly on the trail itself as you leave the Boston trailhead destined for Dravo Cemetery and beyond. I can’t speak to where similar signs may have now been installed approaching Dravo Cemetery from the other direction. Since the Dravo campground is only accessible from the trail, I think you have to presume you can’t get there during the ongoing construction unless, of course, you want to boat down the Youghiogheny River. :-)

Can I park overnight?

Rivnuts from Homestead. PA on 09/03/2020 01:51 PM:
There is no vehicle access to nor parking at The Dravo Camping area. The closest place to park a car would be at a pavilion at Buena Vista which is about 1.5 miles upriver.

Can we stay overnight at Dravos landing with our motor home

Rivnuts from Homestead. PA on 02/24/2020 12:23 AM:
If you are referring to the trailside camping area at the historic Dravo Cemetery, then no. There is no motorized vehicle access to that camping area. There is a vehicle parking lot at the river launch area at Buena Vista and at Boston which are on either side if Dravo Cemetery. However, there is not typically over night parking at either and would likely result in a visit from the community police during the night if parked there all night without any prior notification of your presence.
